In my life, I've had more than a few notions to join a book club. Some of those ended fruitfully... others, less so. (On the latter, most notably the time I showed up for a meeting at a local library and found myself with a roomful of gossiping old ladies who only met under the pretense of having a book club, and really just sat and gabbed about their mutual friends for an hour each week.)
Recently, it occurred to me that I'd like to get involved in some kind of book club for kids or teens; partly because I am a native of Never-Never Land, and partly because everything I read can be classified either as Young Adult or Teen Literature.
So, I investigated my options.
And came up with... Nothing. Yes, that's right: absolutely nothing. How, I asked myself, is it possible that a city like Tulsa could have no YA book club? Why is no one meeting to discuss this fabulously flourishing genre? And why the bloody blazes is no one leading a book group for young people? They can read, too!
Well. My Self responded with this brain-child: You should start one.
My immediate reaction was to let my mouth fall open in shock. Could I really? But, one of my Selves reasoned with the other, why on earth not? Why shouldn't you? You're qualified. You read YA. You write YA. You worked at a youth camp for a bazillion summers. Why, you even have a 15 year-old cousin who reads like a fiend! You're more than qualified!
And I realized I was right. (Clever of me, don't you think?) I also stopped arguing with myself, because I've read The Lord of the Rings, and I know how those things end up. I had no desire to end up bald and toothless, crawling around in a loincloth for the rest of my life.
So here I am. I started the blog because I thought it would be a good way to pass on news and tell people about the club. If you're reading this, and you think such a book club would be fun, leave a comment. I'd like to get some responses, so I'll know whether this thing will be able to get off the ground.
For future reference, I'll post all updates (ie, the Wheres and Whens and Hows) here, so check back!
What a great Idea. I headed a book club for my niece when she was in fifth grade. We'd pick a cheap book from Scholastic and I would buy them. Then we met at my sister's house on early let out day (Wednesday) discuss the book, do a project connected to the book, and have pizza or something. It was great fun!
ReplyDeleteJust think of all the wonderful details and slang you'll get hanging out with teens. It's a no brainer. I wish I could attend do you live in Albuquerque per chance? Didn't think so.
Currently, I'm in a woman's lit group, which means I have to read adult stuff along with reading my YA stuff. I prefer the YA books.
Love your blog and the design! Good luck and I can't wait to hear all the crazy antics that goes on with your book group.
*BING* Did you hear that? That's the lightbulb going on in my head. I'm so thrilled to hear that you're thinking about starting a bookclub!
ReplyDeleteI have a teen girl that LOVES to read TONS. I write YA and write several book reviews and stick them in the books I've read for future references. (It's nice to see what I thought of a book years later--like a book journal!)
Are you planning to do a book club here as your blog? That would be way fun... Let me know what you're thinking, please email me!

You know, the physical book club has been rather slow to get off the ground, and I'm still not convinced it will. I had thought it might be interesting to try an online book club through this blog, if the Tulsa-teen one doesn't actually lift off.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll play with that idea anyway. It might be fun to have an easy way to discuss without everyone having to meet at a location at a specific time. Maybe this would be a fun idea regardless of what happens with the actual book club.
Thoughts? I'll keep you guys updated.
A friend of mine did this for MG. When there's no resources but a need, then I say go for it! :)

I think it was wise of you to consult with yourself about that.
